SERPICO: Adapted by Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler from Peter Maas’s book, Sidney Lumet’s drama portrays the real-life struggle of an honest New York City cop against a corrupt system. Neophyte officer Frank Serpico (Al Pacino) is determined not to let his job get in the way of his individuality. Despite his colleagues’ leery reactions, he keeps one foot firmly planted in the counterculture, sporting a beard and love beads and living in bohemian Greenwich Village, while he performs his police duties with dispatch. Serpico’s peers genuinely ostracize him, however, when he refuses to take bribes like everybody else. Appalled by the extent of police corruption, Serpico goes to his superiors, but when he discovers that they have ignored his charges, he takes the potentially fatal step of breaking the blue wall of silence and going public with his exposé. Serpico’s revelations trigger an independent investigation by the Knapp Commission, but they also make him a marked man, permanently changing his life. Shot on location with a gritty emphasis on documentary-style realism, Serpico presents a city in decay both literally and morally, as everybody is in on the take, and the cops and criminals are almost interchangeable. Released in late 1973, after months of revelations of Presidential malfeasance in the breaking Watergate scandal, Serpico’s true story of bureaucratic depravity touched a cultural nerve, and the film became a hit with both critics and audiences, particularly for Pacino’s complex performance as the honest, long-haired whistle-blower. One year after his star-making triumph in The Godfather, Pacino was nominated for an Oscar again, and lost again; Lumet and Pacino would reunite two years later for another true New York story, Dog Day Afternoon. INTERNAL AFFAIRS: Dennis Peck knows his way around the law. He can launder money, run a scam, fix a bad rap. He can even, for the right price, around a murder. “Trust me,” he says, “I’m a cop.” Richard Gere is Peck and Andy Garcia is Raymond Avila, the investigator determined to bring Peck to justice in this supercharged police thriller. Peck isn’t going down without a fight. The slick, cold-blooded manipulator intends to take Avila’s career, his marriage, even his sanity with him in Internal Affairs. NARC: A narcotics officer is assigned to investigate the killing of a rookie cop, teaming up with the cop’s former partner. As the officer gets closer to learing the truth, he discovers that he has been set up.

Ok, let’s look at The Millionaire’s Express.

First, the movie is about It’s a western! It’s a caper film! It’s martial arts action! It’s a farce! It’s Millionaire’s Express, with Hong Kong stalwart Sammo Hung on both sides of the camera! For HK fans, this film makes nearly as little sense as Jackie Chan’s Fantasy Mission Force. Sammo plays a ne’er do well who comes back to his hometown with a platoon of sexy kung-fu hookers in tow and sets up business. The Shanghai Express, loaded with the rich and famous, is scheduled to come through town , and our man Sammo plans to derail it by blowing up the tracks, then entice the passengers to spend their money in town and (hopefully) visit his brothel as well. So far, so good. Problem is, a gang of thieves is on board the train, and a gang of Japanese mercenaries is after a map of valuable terracotta figures from a temple. Add to this mix a pair of jailbirds who hope to be freed by letting the train run over their shackles and an man and woman dressed inexplicably in 19th-century U.S. Cavalry outfits and you have a thoroughly confusing mess of a Hong Kong action comedy. The only thing that’s missing is a cameo appearance by the Three Stooges. Sammo pulls it off quite well, though, with some killer fight segments towards the end, gorgeous lighting and camera work and trademark jaw-dropping HK stunt work. Anyhow, forget about how confusing it is and just go along for the ride on the Millionaire’s Express. –Jerry Renshaw.

I really enjoyed the performace of Olivia Cheng and Olivia Cheng. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Lung Chan, Olivia Cheng, Kar Lok Chin, Fat Chung, Mui Sang Fan.

They work up a publicity campaign for him, dress provocatively, cause a riot and end up in the police station, where they meet and befriend Nando, Fernando’s son. Next day, Pedro, Nando’s cousin, breaks the news that the publicity campaign was a huge success. They all go to a nightclub for another publicity stunt and the girls learn that Fernando is engaged to a high-society lady and Nando and Pedro to her daughters. The girls return to their small town, but the men realize they have fallen in love and go after them.

Personally, I thought Kristy Swanson was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Donald Sutherland.

Pianist Jim Brickman invites a Salt Lake City audience to “pretend I’m over at your house for dinner and I’m playing you a few songs.” This casual introduction is followed by 75 minutes of beautiful piano playing in a style that incorporates New Age, jazz, and pop influences. Brickman’s solo piano pieces are romantic and impressionistic (his inspiration stemming from a contemplation of personal relationships) and his playing wonderfully emotive. Joining Brickman are singers Olivia Newton-John and Donny Osmond, and saxophonist Dave Koz–a mix that lends a nice variety to the show. Especially effective are Osmond’s performance of “The Love of My Life” and Newton-John’s “I Honestly Love You.” Brickman also makes his vocal debut with a pleasingly mellow timbre on “The Love I Found in You” and “Star Bright.”

Some critics bemoan a similarity of sound in his pieces, citing repetitious arpeggio playing over predictable chord progressions, but fans counter that that repetition defines Brickman’s unique style. While this DVD and the compact disc of the same name are both based on the PBS special, it’s worth noting that the song selection does vary between the two. Snuggle up by the fire with a loved one, grab a glass of wine, and spend the evening with Jim Brickman–you won’t be disappointed. –Tami Horiuchi
